Mālama Maui Nui encourages groups all over Maui County to Get the Drift and Bag It! on International Coastal Cleanup Day, September 16th, by hosting a beach cleanup or joining a beach cleanup in your area. International Coastal Cleanup Day is a global initiative in which participants not only help to make their beaches cleaner, they participate in valuable research that can assist in passing legislature to ensure that certain types of trash never end up on our beaches in the first place. As any scientist knows, data collection is the most important part of a research project. When the research project is based on what types of trash end up, in what amounts, and where, citizens can get involved by counting each piece of rubbish they collect during a beach cleanup. This data collection is made easy by the Clean Swell app, a free app created by the Ocean Conservancy for the purpose of data reporting on trash collection. Mālama Maui Nui is working with partner organizations to serve as trash drop off points, making it easy and convenient for anyone, anywhere, on Maui to host a cleanup. We hope you'll join us this year to Get the Drift and Bag It! for International Coastal Cleanup Day.
