Fun, Meaningful, and Screen-Free

Summer is officially here for Maui Nui! After the excitement of end of year performances, graduations and grad parties subside, a familiar challenge for parents arises. How do you entertain the whole 'ohana with all that free time? Maui County is blessed with many outdoor activities, but it is possible to get burnt out! So, how do we keep the keiki active and engaged without letting them slide into hours of screen time?

At HandsOn Maui, the County of Maui Volunteer Center, our mission is to lead, connect, and mobilize volunteers and volunteer agencies to contribute to a better life on Maui. This summer, we want to help your household to Malama Maui County. Gathering the whole 'ohana for volunteer work is the ultimate way to keep kids busy, teach valuable life lessons, and build community connection.

Outdoor Adventures that Protect the 'Aina

Kids have a natural abundance of energy, and channeling that into outdoor stewardship is incredibly rewarding. Getting dirty in the fresh air is the perfect antidote to the summer screen drain.

On Maui, families can head out with Malama Hamakua Maui on the ruggedly beautiful north shore. Work days are community-centered opportunities to care for the land together. Participants may help with activities such as native planting, mulching, invasive plant management, light maintenance, or trash removal.

On Moloka'i, the Moloka'i Land Trust hosts several community workdays. It is a spectacular way for families to connect with the land by removing invasive weeds and planting native Hawaiian species along the pristine coastline.

On Lana'i, the Lana'i Cat Sanctuary has many opportunities in animal care, "Volunteer Vacations," and foster care for residents.

Indoor Opportunities to Foster Connection and Compassion

When the summer sun gets to be a bit too much, or if your family prefers a cooler environment, indoor volunteering is a great way to team up and make a tangible difference.

At Feed My Sheep, they need assistance sorting fresh produce as well as packing canned goods for weekly distributions all over Maui island in order to ensure that no one in the community goes hungry. It provides a powerful, visual lesson in compassion and resource sharing that stays with children long after school starts up again.

Maui Food Bank offers similar opportunities for families as well. Volunteer with food sorting or delivery driving with your keiki!
