Here's a unique opportunity to join in the restoration of one of the world’s most endangered ecosystems: the Hawaiian tropical dry forest. Hundreds of years ago, dry forests held the highest biodiversity in the islands. Today, less than 5% of their original range remains. At Keālia Pond National Wildlife Refuge, we are restoring this forest one plant at a time, with the help of our volunteers.
Volunteer work is almost always native planting, though we sometimes remove invasive species. By joining our volunteer crew, you will learn
- plant identification
- best planting practices
- invasive removal techniques
We are a hardworking crew but we always have a fun time. After every planting we celebrate with food and drinks.
Every Thursday at 9:00am, we meet at the Keālia Pond Visitor Center and drive together out to our restoration site. We return by 12:00pm. Here is a google maps link: https://goo.gl/maps/7hYNTWnMxkv2WEZFA
Please bring water, sunscreen, and wear durable close toed shoes/boots and long pants. All work gloves and tools will be provided, but feel free to bring your own gloves.
