The Alzheimer's Association Hawaii Chapter on Maui County is currently looking for volunteer support in care and support for caregivers providing care for someone living with Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia.
We are looking for a compassionate, good listener, who wants to make a difference in our community. The Alzheimer’s Association Support Group Facilitator will host monthly caregiver support groups to provide emotional, social and/or educational support to group members.
Facilitators should be:
- Experienced with dementia as a family member or healthcare professional preferred.
- Have the ability to be empathetic and separate personal needs from group needs.
- Have strong and effective listening and communication skills.
- Able to redirect and facilitate discussion
- Able to create and maintain an environment where participants’ thoughts and feelings are valued and members are treated with fairness, equity and respect.
Facilitator Responsibilities:
- Facilitate 12 support group sessions (1 per month) for a small group of caregivers. These are currently held virtually on zoom with plans to move in-person when safe for all.
- Provide a safe, confidential space and engaging space for group members and have knowledge of local resources for support.
- Connect people with additional Association services and volunteer opportunities by proactively making referrals to Alzheimer's Association programs & free 24/7 Helpline.
The Association is seeking volunteer candidates with:
- Demonstrated success with health education using excellent communication, presentation and adult education skills.
- Comfort with computers and familiarity with email
- Ability to network, and collaborate with staff, volunteers, and community partners.
- Passionate about the Alzheimer’s Association mission with personal or professional experience with dementia preferred.
- Must be age 21 to apply. Background checks and completion of training materials are required
