The "Kona low" rolls in, the trade winds take a breather, and suddenly our beautiful islands are tucked under a thick blanket of gray clouds and steady rain. While the 'āina certainly appreciates the soak, it can leave us feeling a little restless at home.

The good news? The need for community support doesn't stop when the sun hides away. In fact, rainy days are the perfect time to head indoors and lend a hand to our local nonprofits. Whether you are on Maui, Molokaʻi, or Lānaʻi, there are meaningful ways to stay dry while making a huge splash in someone's life.

Maui

If you're looking to escape the puddles in Central or West Maui, our food security partners are always in need of an extra set of hands in the warehouse.

  • Maui Food Bank (Wailuku): Forget the rain and help sort through donations! Their Wailuku warehouse is a hub of activity where volunteers sort, pack, and prep food boxes for families across the county. It's high-energy, indoor work that keeps you moving.

  • Maui Humane Society (Pu'unēnē): Did you know you can volunteer to "read to the dogs" or help with "cat ohana" socialization? These indoor activities provide vital comfort to shelter animals who might be feeling a bit spooked by the thunder. Plus, there's always a mountain of laundry to help fold-a never-ending but essential indoor task!

Molokaʻi

Over on the Friendly Isle, service is all about neighbor-to-neighbor support. When the weather turns, the focus shifts to keeping our essential services running smoothly.

  • Molokaʻi Community Health Center: They often look for volunteers to assist with indoor administrative tasks or helping organize their food pantry. It's a great way to support the health and wellness of the Kaunakakai community without needing an umbrella.

  • Sustʻāinable Molokai: While much of their work is in the field, check in for indoor "prep" days where volunteers help process local produce or assist with educational materials for their food sovereignty programs.

Lānaʻi

On Lānaʻi, the community spirit is as strong as ever, even when the clouds hang low over Lānaʻihale.

  • Lānaʻi Cat Sanctuary: While the sanctuary has beautiful outdoor spaces, there are plenty of covered areas and "indoor" tasks. From helping with administrative organization to simply providing indoor socialization for the "Lānaʻi Lions," your presence helps these rescued cats feel safe and loved regardless of the weather.
