When Maui was devastated by the 2023 wildfires, countless families faced unimaginable loss, and among those most deeply affected were our kūpuna, the beloved elders who form the heart of our island communities. In the midst of tragedy, one Maui County nonprofit stepped forward with compassion, resilience, and action: Our Kūpuna.

A Mission Rooted in Care and Connection

Founded with the mission "to connect Hawai'i's kūpuna with volunteers, resources, and essentials to ensure food security, community connection, and safe home aging," Our Kūpuna has become a lifeline for over 1,000 kūpuna statewide since its founding five years ago.

What began as a grassroots response to the COVID-19 pandemic evolved into a powerful community network, one that would again rise to the challenge after the Lahaina wildfires.

Responding to Disaster: The Aloha Maui Program

In late 2023, as the community worked to recover from the fires, Our Kūpuna launched its Aloha Maui Program to support displaced kūpuna temporarily housed in Lahaina hotels. This initiative was about more than delivering groceries, it was about restoring dignity, hope, and human connection.

Thanks to funding from the Hawai'i Community Foundation, American Red Cross, and Maui United Way, the organization was able to quickly mobilize support teams. Many of those hired to help were themselves survivors, individuals who had lost jobs and homes but found purpose in helping others rebuild.

Real Impact in Real Time

Since launching the Aloha Maui Program, Our Kūpuna has made incredible strides:

  • Delivered groceries and supplies to over 311 households

  • Provided personalized care navigation for 360 kūpuna

  • Arranged transportation for 67 kūpuna

From a warm hug at the door to a sincere phone call checking in, every action taken by the Our Kūpuna team embodies aloha and compassion.

Looking Ahead

As recovery continues, Our Kūpuna's work is far from over. They remain deeply committed to ensuring that no kūpuna is left behind. Their team continues to provide care navigation, food security, and transportation assistance for those still rebuilding their lives.

If you or someone you know is a Maui kūpuna aged 60+ who has been affected by the wildfires, Our Kūpuna is here to help.
