The Maui Bicycling League (MBL) isn't just a group of cyclists-it's a movement of everyday residents, neighbors, and friends working to make Maui safer, healthier, and more connected through biking and walking.

At the heart of this vision is the West Maui Greenway (WMG)a 25-mile multi-use path that's been a dream for decades and is now gaining real traction, thanks to a passionate network of volunteers.

From Dream to Reality-Powered by Volunteers

The West Maui Greenway was first proposed more than 50 years ago. However it wasn't until dedicated volunteers began rallying support that the idea became a community priority.

Over the years, MBL's volunteers have:

  • Organized community rides and workshops

  • Spoken at public meetings and written testimony

  • Hosted events like Love the West Maui Greenway

  • Launched youth bike education programs

  • Helped secure early landowner support

With a 2015 grant from the National Park Service, MBL brought stakeholders together, held community workshops, and developed the first official WMG concept plan-a major milestone. These grassroots efforts even helped secure the WMG's place in Maui's official recovery plan following the Lahaina wildfires.

"Volunteers are the reason we've come this far," says Saman Dias, Chair of the Maui Bicycling League. "They've given their time, energy, and countless hours to advocate for safe, climate-resilient, low-impact transportation options that serve both residents and visitors."

A Path Toward Connection and Resilience

Thanks to this shared vision, over $15 million in funding is now committed to planning and construction of the West Maui Greenway. But the work isn't done yet!

Beyond the Greenway, MBL is teaming up with the YMCA in Kahului to teach keiki safe cycling skills.

They've also successfully pushed for the 3-Foot Law signage, reminding drivers to keep a safe passing distance from cyclists, and they proudly support youth-led climate movements like the Navahine Climate Agreement.

How You Can Help

The Greenway is more than just a path-it's a promise: A promise of connection, resilience, and a healthier Maui.

You don't have to be a cyclist to make a difference. MBL needs volunteers for event support, advocacy, outreach, grant writing, and more. Every skill helps move this dream forward.
