Who We Are
Pacific Whale Foundation is a non-profit organization founded in 1980 to protect a declining humpback whale population from global threats, including commercial whaling. Early pioneers in noninvasive whale research, our scientists began offering educational whalewatches on the weekends, after studying whales and their ocean environment during the week. The trips were a means to share our findings, educate the public about whales, and raise needed funds for our research and conservation work.
That same tradition continues today. Our PacWhale cruise operation is 100% owned by the non-profit Pacific Whale Foundation, as are our retail Ocean Stores. All of the profits that we generate go to supporting Pacific Whale Foundation’s work to protect our oceans through science and advocacy.
Through our ocean ecotours, we have educated nearly 3.5 million people about the marine environment, while raising needed funds to support vital whale and dolphin research studies, educational programs for children and adults, as well as important conservation programs, including our fight to stop commercial whaling.
What We Do
Our mission is to protect the ocean through science and advocacy, and to inspire environmental stewardship. We accomplish this through our ongoing research, education and conservation programs.
Our vision is to be the people’s environmental organization for the protection of the world’s whales, dolphins and other marine animals living wild in their natural habitat. We believe that it is essential to involve the public in our mission. We encourage you to become a part of our global community of people who care about the future of our oceans and marine wildlife.
We offer many volunteer opportunities and encourage anyone that is interested in donating their time to the causes we work on behalf of, to join us.
