Who We Are

He Pouhana No Haleakalā | A Support Pillar for Haleakalā

FHNP is a 100% volunteer-driven nonprofit dedicated to preserving and protecting Haleakalā National Park through community engagement and service. The Friends of Haleakalā National Park fosters strong relationships between Maui’s diverse communities (both residents and visitors) and Haleakalā National Park through service, volunteerism, and education.

We do this to preserve, protect, and promote the ecological and cultural heritage of this special place. At FHNP, we believe that building lasting pilina with Haleakalā not only strengthens the park but also nurtures the connection between the community and the land. Through collective effort, we mālama (care for) and protect this extraordinary place for future generations. Join us and become part of the FHNP ʻohana today!

What We Do

The Friends of Haleakalā National Park (FHNP) connects volunteers with meaningful opportunities to protect and restore Haleakalā’s ecosystems and cultural heritage. Our projects are grounded in fostering pilina (relationships) with the land through hands-on conservation, restoration, and education efforts.

Our Key Initiatives:

  • Native Habitat Restoration – Collect seeds and plant native species like koa, māmane, and ‘ōhi‘a to revitalize Haleakalā’s fragile ecosystems.
  • Endangered Species Protection – Support efforts to protect endangered species, including the Nēnē, Hawai‘i’s state bird.
  • Service Trips – Join multi-day trips into the crater to assist with restoration efforts or spend time volunteering at the park nursery, nurturing native plants that will be used in future projects.

By volunteering with FHNP, you contribute directly to the preservation of Haleakalā, deepening your pilina (relationship) with this wahi pana (sacred place).
