Who We Are
The Foster Grandparent Program (FGP) is federally sponsored by the Corporation for National and Community Service. The local sponsor for the program is the Department of Human Services. The program provides a way for volunteers age 55 and older to stay active by serving children and youth in their communities. The program’s mission is to provide opportunities with a non-taxable stipend for income qualified persons who provide supportive person – to –person services in health, education, welfare or related settings to help alleviate the physical, mental or emotional problems of children having special or exceptional needs.
What We Do
FGP volunteers serve in DOE schools, after school programs, Head Start Programs and private non-profit preschools. Volunteers are matched with teachers and in the classroom serve students individually by reading, assisting with assignments, and offering encouragement and support. Volunteers serve a minimum of 15 hours per week.
