Who We Are

The Maui Nui Seabird Recovery Project, established in 2006, works to locate, protect, and enhance native seabird populations and their habitats across Maui Nui. We envision a future where Maui's seabirds thrive in stable populations, protected from invasive predators and habitat loss. In turn, restored seabird populations will enhance the terrestrial and coral reef ecosystems of the islands, as they bring vital nutrients from the sea to the land. Through our work with several different seabird species (3 of them endangered) we have seen the positive impacts on the land and the community.

What We Do

We monitor populations of seabirds on Maui. We work to restore native seabird habitats across Maui, including coastal strand and montane forest. We conduct outreach and education to the community about native Hawaiian species and ecosystems. We triage downed and injured wildlife, especially seabirds suffering from confusion and exhaustion as a result of distraction by light pollution.
