Who We Are

We love our volunteers! Through their enthusiasm, vitality, and the multitude of tasks they complete, they help to extend the scope of Hale Makua Health Services' programs and services. The philosophy of our volunteers is based on the sharing of oneself through interaction with residents, families, and our professional staff. We have many volunteer opportunities from working with residents to office work to gardening. Most volunteer opportunities allow you to make a difference on your schedule. Please contact our office with any questions at 808-871-9271.

Volunteer Requirements:

1. Complete and return a volunteer application form. The form includes permission to run a criminal background check. We do check criminal records for all volunteer applicants. The form can be downloaded here and returned by fax, email, or in person to the Volunteer Specialist at 472 Kaulana St. Kahului, HI 96732.

2. Attend a 1 hour orientation session at Hale Makua in Kahului.

3. If you plan to volunteer for more than 10 hours per week, you will need to complete a 2-step TB skin test. Testing takes place at our Kahului facility.

You must complete all three steps before you can volunteer.

What We Do

Hale Makua Health Services welcomes volunteers to help fulfill our mission to improve the well-being of those in our care through compassionate personalized health services in our home and yours.

Hale Makua was founded in 1946 as a home for Maui elders who needed residential care, but had no one to care for them and no means to pay for care. Following World War II, members of the Young Buddhist Association and the community raised funds and built our first 24-bed home in Happy Valley. In 1953, Hale Makua was given the facilities at Malulani Hospital where present Hale Makua Wailuku opened in 1968 as a 124-bed nursing home featuring a unique open-air design in a lush garden setting.

Today Hale Makua Health Services has grown to include two locations in Kahului and Wailuku, and five programs designed to meet the changing healthcare needs of the Maui community. Our programs include Long Term Care, Home Health by Hale Makua, Rehab by Hale Makua,  Adult Day Health and Care Homes by Hale Makua.
