Who We Are

Hale Ho`ike`ike means House of Display or House To Attain Wisdom in Hawaiian and that is exactly what we strive for at our museum.  The architecture of the old Bailey House itself is worthy of preservation, designed in the 19th century to function as the Wailuku Female Seminary and later added to by Edward Bailey.  Our collection of pre-western contact Hawaiian artifacts is the largest in the County and on display in our museum.  Our archives are accessible by appointment and holds over 8,000 historical photographs as well as artifacts, maps, memorabilia, geneologies, and other historical documents.  We host a number of educational programs, discussions, and workshops as well as community events at the museum througout the year.  We are also able to conduct tours of the museum in Hawaiian.

What We Do

The Maui Historical Society Board of Trustees and staff are dedicated to the mission to collect, preserve, study, interpret and share the history and heritage of Maui. As caretakers of the land, artifacts, photographs, and documents that have been entrusted to our care, it is our responsibility to ensure that the cultural roots and history that define our community will continue to be there for future generations.

In addordance with this mission, the Maui Historical Society continues to preserve and support Hale Ho`ike`ike Museum, also known as the Bailey House, as the repository for the largest collection of Hawaiian artifacts on the island of Maui.
