Volunteer: Removing the Invasive Plants

We need help removing the invasive plants on a regular basis. Maintaining an organic farm with natural support requires a lot of manual work to constantly remove the invasive plants that are being blown in by the wind and dropped in by the birds. "Laulima" is the Hawaiian word which means 'many hands/contributing.' And we are eternally grateful to the many volunteers who have made our work lighter through laulima.

One needs to wear good strong shoes. We provide gloves. Bring your hat and sunscreen. We'll provide hand picks and larger picks, a sawzall, a ho'o, and other tools. We will provide refreshments, as well (something to eat and drink).

Volunteer: Compassionate Companions

Compassionate Companions, AKA No Person Dies Alone Program

Compassionate Companions

What is it?

Compassionate Companions is a program that offers companionship and support to patients who are nearing the end of life. Compassionate Companions provides a dignified death to individuals who have no family or close friends to sit with them at the end of life. At Maui Health, deaths occur each year within the hospital. Through this program, we can provide witness to a person's life and compassion at their passing.

Why is program important?

We can provide companionship to patients in the dying process who are alone, and in doing so, provide a gift of respect and dignity to another human being at the end of life.

This volunteer opportunity is an 'on call' opportunity.  If a patient's family or close friend cannot be there, or is on the way but far away, a volunteer sits with the patient.  After on-boarding as a hospital volunteer, you will go through a special training.  You will be on a list to call when we are needed at the hospital to sit with a patient who is getting ready to pass.  We can just sit quietly, hold their hand if you feel comfortable, record any last words of thoughts to give to give family members or friends who could not be there.  We have some background music options to play if desired.  The hospital Chaplin is close by if needed.

Requirement is to sit up to 4 hours, then you can continue if needed or another volunteer will be called.  You can be called day or night and can tell the volunteer coordinator any times you are not available.

This is a most rewarding experience for a volunteer, and a comforting service for a person at life's end.

Give me a call at 808-280-4707 for more information or to get your on-boarding started.

Aloha, Barbara Potopowitz

Volunteer: Youth Programs: Art Kits

Aloha!

We are looking for volunteers interested in preparing art kits that will be distributed to various organizations including Lanai Public Library and School, Ka Hale A Ke Ola Homeless Resource Centers in Wailuku, and Molokai Arts Center.  These kits are part of an ongoing project, but when we need help mostly depends on when we receive supplies and we may not have an immediate need!

Art Kit preparation needs vary with each project, but may require:

cutting paper or fabric laminating, stapling, or gluing gathering and counting supplies  packaging and ensuring each kit has the necessary components

This is typically a task that may be done while sitting or standing, and is a great opportunity to help our community's keiki while listening to some tunes or catching up on your audiobook and podcasts!

This volunteer program serves children in Los Angeles and Colorado. Volunteers do not need to be based in Los Angeles or Colorado.

Make a Difference in a Student’s Life

Join EnCorps’ STEMx Tutors program to virtually tutor math to middle school students who are under-performing in Foundational Math, Pre-Algebra and Algebra 1.

As a volunteer math tutor, you prepare students for the rigor of high school mathematics and establish the foundational knowledge needed to pursue a college education that prepares students for a career in an increasingly technical world.

EnCorps STEMx Tutors make a significant difference in a student’s relationship with math: 84% of students who take part in the program increased their math scores in the 2021-22 academic year!

Choose When You Tutor One Hour, Twice a Week

The STEMx Tutors program is designed for busy professionals like you. As a STEMx Tutor you commit to tutoring one hour, twice a week. You choose the 1:1 or 2:1 student to tutor ratio.

As a 1:1 tutor, you will determine the day and time of your virtual tutoring sessions with your student. In turn, the 2:1 tutoring sessions take place for one hour, twice a week between 2:00 - 5:00 p.m. PST.

We ask that you commit to tutoring for a minimum of one semester with the option to renew. Many of our tutors have been in the program for three years.

Volunteer: Youth Services Volunteers & Science / Tech Educators Look No Further!

The Maui County Composite of the Civil Air Patrol is looking for those interested in youth services to volunteer for our amazing organization!  We are a federally-chartered (like the Peace Corps) non-profit organization that specializes in Cadet (Youth) Programs, Emergency Services, and Aerospace Education!

Our World-class Youth program is designed for individuals aged 12-18 and teaches them our core values of Integrity, Respect, Excellence, and Volunteer service through classes and training in Leadership, Character Development, Aerospace Education, Physical Fitness, Emergency Services, and Volunteerism.  We do this through a proven system borrowed from the United States Air Force using military ranks and progressions to move youths from followers, to group leaders, and to eventually entire squadron leadership.  Our highest level of achievement meets the same standards as entry requirements into the United States Air Force Academy and can prepare young people in seeking their goals whether or not they have military ambitions.

We also have programs to allow those young men and women interested in any field of Aerospace from pilots to engineers and even information technology (cyber) and STEM as Civil Air Patrol has several award winning curricula in those fields ranging from elementary school to it's own high school textbook through generous funding and support of the Federal Government.  It is the Civil Air Patrol's goal to develop and provide curricula to any and all educators as a free service to support the advancement of Aerospace and STEM in America's classrooms, going so far as providing millions of dollars in free STEM kits to educators every year.

For educators, we provide an AEM program that allows you to access those STEM kits and curricula at any time and we even provide a TOP (Teach Orientation Program) flight in our aircraft so that you can share the joys of flying with your students and get them more interested in Aerospace and STEM.

In addition to all these great programs, for adult volunteers, we offer our extensive CAP University adult training program in which you can learn and train in a wide variety of disciplines including Emergency Services (FEMA training, Aircrew Training, Ground Crew Training, etc),  Communications, Leadership, Public Relations, Safety, Logistics, Operations, Finance, and many more!  This is all included as a member of our organization.  Those trained in certain disciplines can also be eligible to help our local and state government in providing needed services during, before, and after critical emergencies.

For more information on these great opportunities, please feel free to contact us at any time!

Volunteer: Volunteer (remote) - Legal Aid Fair Housing Investigations

OVERVIEW:

The Fair Housing Enforcement Program at the Legal Aid Society of Hawai`i is seeking volunteers to assist our organization in creating a community where all people have an equal right to obtain and enjoy housing without facing illegal discrimination.

VOLUNTEER'S ROLE:

While blatant acts of housing discrimination do occur, discrimination is, more often, subtle and hard of detect. Unfortunately, even the most subtle acts of discrimination result in the same wide-scale unfairness and segregation of communities. The most effective tool used to detect housing discrimination is Testing, a process where volunteers (known as Testers) pose as home-seekers in a variety of housing situations and record their experiences.

Testers have the opportunity to positively impact our local community by helping to investigate fair housing practices. Hours are very flexible, and due to the COVID-19 crisis all volunteer work is currently being done remotely.

QUALIFICATIONS:

At least 18 years old   Detail oriented  Able to write objective and factual reports  Reliable, and responsive to calls and emails  Positive attitude and willingness to communicate with Legal Aid staff as well as housing providers  Ability to speak another language in addition to English is a bonus, but not required

*Unfortunately, those with an active real estate license or legal practice are NOT eligible

APPLICATION: http://www.fairhousinghawaii.org/attend-tester-training.html

If you are interested please fill out the application above and we will reach out if your application meets the program requirements. Before you can begin volunteering there will be a phone screening to ensure you are eligible, a brief 2-hour virtual training, and a criminal background check.

Questions:

If you have any questions please contact the Fair Housing Investigations Coordinator at 808-670-0186.

Volunteer: Need help bundling bags for community cleanups

Community members reach out to us when they want to organize a cleanup, in which we provide supplies. Instead of using traditional trash bags, we partner with a local brewery who donates their left over canvas bags so they have a second life rather than going straight to the landfill. We pick the bags up bi-monthly and need assistance at our office to bundle them together to give out for cleanups. This can be done any time within our work hours (Tuesday-Saturday 8am-3pm).

Volunteer: Processing Paint

One of our solid waste programs, called Paint Exchange, is a program where community members bring latex paint that's still usable however they don't have a need for it anymore. Others will come to Malama Maui Nui when they need paint, in which they can go into our paint cage and collected however much paint they need/want. Over time, the paint will become unusable and will need to be processed for solidification. This program supports landfill diversion and chemicals leaching into the ground. The second Saturday of every month is dedicated to support programs like this one.
