HILT works in three programmatic areas: ʻĀina Protection, Stewardship, and Connection. They prioritize the protection of coastlines, wahi kupuna (ancestral spaces), and lands that grow healthy food for Hawaiʻi’s people, and partner to conserve mauka forests and ranches. Participants will help with restoring habitat by removing invasive plants, planting native species, working in loʻi (taro) patches and more.

Our Kūpuna’s mission is to connect Hawai’i’s kūpuna (seniors) with volunteers, resources, and essentials to ensure food security, community connection, and safe home aging. We connect low-income homebound kūpuna with volunteers who can shop and deliver groceries, medication and other necessary supplies. We also match kūpuna with phone buddies to talk stories or high school pen pals.

There are low-income, homebound kūpuna who struggle to access essential items on their own, and not all older adults in Hawaiʻi have ʻohana on island to look out for them. Our mission is to connect kūpuna with volunteer shoppers who are willing to shop for and deliver groceries, medications, and other essential supplies to the kupuna’s home every two weeks, along with weekly check-in calls to talk story.

While we started assisting kūpuna who needed to stay home to stay safe from the COVID-19 coronavirus, we have discovered that many kūpuna struggle to access their essentials (groceries, medication, household supplies) on their own regardless of the pandemic or vaccination status.

We are committed to serving these individuals, and our wonderful volunteers are too! We now require a referral for every kupuna requesting our assistance, this helps us to ensure appropriate and full care for those in need. We are helping to make these lasting connections on every island of Hawai'i, and we especially need more volunteers in rural communities and neighboring islands.  Help us fulfill our mission: to ensure food access and safe in-home aging for Hawaii's kūpuna!

You can add sparkle to the day of kupuna simply by doing the following:

* offering a ride

* taking a walk

* chatting on the phone

*  lending a helping hand

and many other ways to brighten  their day and support a neighbor who wishes to live independently.

To help with the number of kūpuna who are reaching out to request our service, we're looking for remote volunteers who would like to join our administrative team. As a remote administrative volunteer, you would help with:

- Answering incoming phone calls from kūpuna and volunteers

- Screening new volunteers

- Connecting kupuna with volunteers

- Periodically checking in with kupuna-volunteer pairs

- Assisting with other projects if you have a particular skill - reach out to us!

Essentially, we're looking for volunteer phone operators who can 1) commit to at least 6-12 hours per week, 2) have a computer (and internet) at home they can use, 3) who is not afraid of technology and using multiple platforms, and last but not least, 4) consider themselves an above-average communicator.
