HILT works in three programmatic areas: ʻĀina Protection, Stewardship, and Connection. They prioritize the protection of coastlines, wahi kupuna (ancestral spaces), and lands that grow healthy food for Hawaiʻi’s people, and partner to conserve mauka forests and ranches. Participants will help with restoring habitat by removing invasive plants, planting native species, working in loʻi (taro) patches and more.

At Feed My Sheep we love giving healthy food to people in need.

Our response to the great challenges of this year continues, but how we respond is changing. Feed My Sheep staff will continue to need assistance sorting fresh produce and now we will also have canned goods to pack for our distributions. We also have projects around Feed My Sheep that need volunteer power, like preparing newsletters, recycling, and care for our warehouse.

You can help us with all these projects and prepare Feed My Sheep for a new year.

Things to know:

Our Kūpuna’s mission is to connect Hawai’i’s kūpuna (seniors) with volunteers, resources, and essentials to ensure food security, community connection, and safe home aging. We connect low-income homebound kūpuna with volunteers who can shop and deliver groceries, medication and other necessary supplies. We also match kūpuna with phone buddies to talk stories or high school pen pals.

There are low-income, homebound kūpuna who struggle to access essential items on their own, and not all older adults in Hawaiʻi have ʻohana on island to look out for them. Our mission is to connect kūpuna with volunteer shoppers who are willing to shop for and deliver groceries, medications, and other essential supplies to the kupuna’s home every two weeks, along with weekly check-in calls to talk story.

While we started assisting kūpuna who needed to stay home to stay safe from the COVID-19 coronavirus, we have discovered that many kūpuna struggle to access their essentials (groceries, medication, household supplies) on their own regardless of the pandemic or vaccination status.

We are committed to serving these individuals, and our wonderful volunteers are too! We now require a referral for every kupuna requesting our assistance, this helps us to ensure appropriate and full care for those in need. We are helping to make these lasting connections on every island of Hawai'i, and we especially need more volunteers in rural communities and neighboring islands.  Help us fulfill our mission: to ensure food access and safe in-home aging for Hawaii's kūpuna!

Mālama Māla Help your community farm grow! Grow Some Good and Maui Family YMCA host Mālama Māla, a farm workshop and work day, every second Tuesday from 9 a.m.-11 a.m. Volunteers are welcome to join our farm crew in expanding Nā Māla Kaiāulu.

Activities center around agroforestry and include planting, harvest, soil health, pest control, composting, and more.

A Disaster Assessment Volunteer responds after a disaster, assesses damage by collecting and recording information on the effects of the disaster and observing conditions and degrees of damage. The information that is collected is then used to provide funding to those that need it for repairs or moving costs.

When disaster strikes your community, Disaster Action Team (DAT) volunteers are the first to respond—bringing comfort, care, and critical resources like food and shelter to those in need. Join this vital team by signing up for on-call shifts and helping ensure 24-hour emergency support is always just a phone call away for your neighbors.

Hear firsthand why others have volunteered in this role. Training is free and the experience is priceless. 

Keālia Pond National Wildlife Refuge is known for its native Hawaiian Stilt and Coot nesting habitat. But there are areas of the refuge unseen by the public eye that are being restored to a Hawaiian dryland forest ecosystem, one of the most rare systems in the world. Our objective is to plant species that were once found in this area and to replace the previously establish, and invasive, Kiawe forests. The area was previously burned in 2019 by a brush fire that tore across the valley towards Kihei, narrowly missing our visitor center. The fire was a blessing in disguise as it gave us the opportunity to remove the Kiawe, replant native species, and reintroduce an almost extinct ecosystem. Working conditions are in hot and buggy areas of the Refuge with minimal shade. Come join us in this unique opportunity! 

Important Gear:

The area is slightly rugged as we are required to walk over mulched Kiawe. The fields of this mulch often times still have the long thorns of the Kiawe tree still in them and can cause harm if not properly equipped.

Participate in Pacific Whale Foundation’s marine debris citizen science research. Select a beach of your choosing to clean up and fill out a data sheet recording what debris items are present. This data allows our researchers to expand their data set and analyze the trends and patterns of debris on Maui’s beaches and shores. The information is used to develop educational campaigns and for policy development.

Pick up your supplies (gloves, recycled bag, datasheet) at Pacific Whale Foundation Ocean Stores, or at participating partners, including Maui Brewing Company Kihei, Mahalo Ale Works, Whole Foods, IHOP. Learn more about the Coastal Marine Debris Monitoring Program. 

If you don't need a cleanup kit you can simply fill out the form online. 

Every second Saturday we invite local families to bring what they can, take what they need. Volunteers are needed to help with sorting donations, setting up the night before, and preparing to make sure Saturday goes well. This is also a chance to clean up storage, pull items for partner providers and other odd jobs. Snacks are served. 9am-12noon & 3pm-9pm.

Aloha!!

We are looking for green-fingered helpers to assist with keeping the grounds around the Hui in great condition. You will be helping with day-to-day garden maintenance work, primarily weeding, edging and deadheading and picking up refuse and litter from grounds as needed. You will help maintain the grounds so that all areas are presentable to visitors and students.

There are many disabled fire survivors that are moving back to Lahaina or moving to another living situation after being displaced for over a year. Some of them don't have the ability to carry, pack or even move their personal belongings.  We are looking for strong, compassionate full of Aloha individuals to kokua with physical labor and transporting the belongings to their new homes.

Please join us at Ka'ehu for our 4th Sunday of every month cleanup of this beautiful bay!  We work together to pick up marine debris that's continuously washing ashore, from all around the Pacific Ocean and locally.  Then we weigh, sort and count it all.  This information gets added to our ongoing database since 2012, when we first began these regular cleanups at Ka'ehu.

It's a very rewarding and educational experience (with good karma and outdoor exercise)!

We need many loving hands to help pick our biodynamic cotton on the farm! We also need help ginning the cotton. A cotton gin? Yes! We do have a cotton gin! We make farm-enhanced products like pillows, seatbelt covers, and use the cotton to decorate cards. We also make our own paper by mixing old jeans, our cotton, freshly picked flowers, and put them all into the blender and lay it out as freshly made paper that we'll dry for gift-wrapping and card making. So bring your old jeans and denims, and we'll put them to use!

We need help removing the invasive plants on a regular basis. Maintaining an organic farm with natural support requires a lot of manual work to constantly remove the invasive plants that are being blown in by the wind and dropped in by the birds. "Laulima" is the Hawaiian word which means 'many hands/contributing.' And we are eternally grateful to the many volunteers who have made our work lighter through laulima.

One needs to wear good strong shoes. We provide gloves. Bring your hat and sunscreen. We'll provide hand picks and larger picks, a sawzall, a ho'o, and other tools. We will provide refreshments, as well (something to eat and drink). 

Be a part of helping local families get needed essentials while also helping reduce waste. Every month we invite local families to bring what they can, take what they need. Volunteers are invited to be a part of the community by helping with sorting donations, families shopping, be a warm breath of Aloha at the welcome table, organizing the books/games area, organizing toy area and more. Come for an hour, or two or more. Kids are welcome if watched by parents, we do not offer childcare.  Beverages and snacks are served.

Everyone will fill out a waiver before going up. 

Trucks are easiest to go up but folks are also able to catch rides with others. 

Every Monday from 9:am to 10:am food, pet food and clothes from the Maui Foodbank is distributed to the disadvantage at the Paia Public Parking Lot.The parking lot is located right after the Paia bypass road as you enter Paia from Kahului. We distribute every Monday unless Monday is a holiday and the FoodBank is closed. Then the distribution is moved to Tuesday that week.

Aloha---At La'akea village we need help with our beautiful herb garden! In the dry summer, we need help watering, maintaining, and occasionally harvesting herbs to sell in the Country Store.

We are a life-sharing Day Program for adults with disabilities.

We would appreciate anyone with a 'green thumb' and a love for herbs--we have Swiss chard, lemongrass, oregano, chives, sage, and rosemary that we currently sell in our Country Store.

We also dehydrate some of our herbs to sell in our Country Store.

If you love Native Hawaiian plants, you'll love the Weed & Pot Club!

This volunteer gardening group weeds in our Gardens and pots plants in our nursery facility. Come ready to work with garden attire and covered shoes. Tools, gloves, sunscreen, refreshments, and expertise provided! The group enjoys a potluck after they work, but this is optional. Weed & Pot Club members also receive many garden perks including discounted merchandise, group field trips, and free Hawaiian plants!

Families are welcome to participate! All children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

Do you love animals?

Join the Maui Humane Society volunteer team! We are always looking for new volunteers to participate in a variety of tasks such as dog walking, laundry & cleaning, socializing cats, assisting the public with questions, administrative tasks, fundraising, veterinary assistance, public outreach events and community education.  There's something for everyone to do, no matter your age or ability! We also always need short term foster parents for cats, dogs and critters as well. Volunteers must be a minimum of 16 years old, but keiki under 16 can volunteer with a parent or guardian. We are open 7 days a week and offer the flexibility to drop in anytime to volunteer between 8:30 am and 5:00 pm!  Endless cuddles, slobbery kisses and fun guaranteed!

When you volunteer with East Maui Animal Refuge you will make a difference in the lives, health, happiness and comfort of rescued animals. We need volunteers who can do the heavy lifting and dirty work (cleaning litter boxes, sweeping and mopping and so much more) as well as volunteers who can help with the lighter tasks (laundry, changing food and water, cleaning dishes).

You will be making a difference not only to the animals that take shelter here, but to your overall community. You will develop relationships with our animals, our staff and the larger community of our small island of Maui. 

Commitment 

Volunteers are an essential part of our daily operations and we rely on each other as much as the animals rely on us. Our animals depend on our volunteers every day for food, water, care and affection. Our volunteers must be able to commit to a regular schedule and time commitment. When you commit to a volunteer position with EMAR, both the animals and our current team of volunteers depend on you. You become a valuable member of our team and play an important role in the success of our mission. Please do not make a commitment that you may be unable to fulfill, or take on responsibilities for which you feel unqualified.

Basic Responsibilities

Provide fresh food, water and linens. Sweep & mop floors. Clean & refresh litter boxes. Kennel cleaning. Laundry. Clean countertops, walls, shelves. 

Requirements

Love and compassion for animals. Minimum 16 years old. Must be physically fit and able to lift at least 15lbs. Must be responsible, reliable, committed and diligent.

You will be making a difference not only to the animals that take shelter here, but to your overall community. You will develop a relationship with our animals, our staff and the larger community of our small island of Maui. 

Commitment 

Volunteers are an essential part of our daily operations and we rely on each other as much as the animals rely on us. Our animals depend on our volunteers every day for food, water, care and affection. Our volunteers must be able to commit to a regular schedule and time commitment. When you commit to a volunteer position with EMAR, both the animals and our current team of volunteers depend on you. You become a valuable member of our team and play an important role in the success of our mission. Please do not make a commitment that you may be unable to fulfill, or take on responsibilities for which you feel unqualified.

Basic Responsibilities

Provide fresh food, water and linens. Sweep & mop floors. Clean & refresh litter boxes. Kennel cleaning. Laundry. Clean countertops, walls, shelves. 

Requirements

Love and compassion for animals. Minimum 16 years old. Must be physically fit and able to lift at least 15lbs. Must be responsible, reliable, committed and diligent.

Training is required and provided for new volunteers. We provide all cleaning supplies.

Participate Monthly

The Adopt A Beach program from PWF is an opportunity for residents of Maui County to help cleanup a beach of their choosing and contribute valuable data to the Coastal Marine Debris Monitoring Program Database. 

Volunteers choose any beach in Maui County and are provided a reusable beach cleanup kit including a large vinyl bag, reusable, washable gloves, laminated data sheet and a sharpie marker. Every month volunteers cleanup their beach and submit a picture of their data sheet to the Conservation program at PWF. 

Incentives include discounts at the PWF Ocean Store and after one year of monthly cleanups a free PacWhale Ecotour.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

We are seeking assistance to clear our orchards of invasive species and then rescuing and nurturing the growth of existing trees. 

This opportunity may include pulling weeds, chopping down trees, clearing debris, feeding trees with compost/decomposing plant material, and more. 

Tools are provided. While experience is not required, as we will provide on-site training, if you have experience using machetes, sickles, pick-axes, chainsaws, or pole saws it is a plus. 

MEO serves the entire island and we want to look our best for our clients.
We are looking for a gardener, someone with a green thumb who can help the plants around our Family Center thrive and to beautify our grounds.
