Hāli`imaile Community Garden & Hāli`imaile Micro Farms is seeking a volunteer Grant Writer.  The Grant Writer is responsible for the research, development, and preparation of grant proposals to funding sources. The Grant Writer works in collaboration with programs and the Treasurer.

 

Responsibilities:

Research and identify new grant opportunities. Create & modify current grant proposal templates. Ensure quality applications are prepared, presented, and submitted by the deadline. Develop budget reports, budget summaries, and budget narratives with the Treasurer. Prepare all grant follow up reports with key milestones and progress to funders. Hāli‘imaile Community Garden is looking for a volunteer employee to help with grounds keeping and maintenance around our facility on a weekly basis. General good order of the parking lot, driveway, sheds, greenhouse, & outhouse. Note: Lawn care is not part of the groundskeeper duties.

 

Qualifications

Ability to use standard gardening equipment such as power tools, pruning shears, shovels, clippers, etc. Ability to lift, bend, carry, reach, & dig. Familiarity with pruning shrubs and fruit trees. Ability to work in all weather conditions which may include extreme heat, rain, and wind. Able to learn and demonstrate a familiarity with organic horticulture & Hāli‘imaile Community Garden programs. Ability to follow directions given by staff. Must bring/wear closed-toed shoes and work gloves. Must sign and submit the required application form and volunteer paperwork. 

 

Orientation/Training

A history and tour of Hāli‘imaile Community Garden. Description of garden rules. Overview of garden programs and volunteer opportunities. Volunteers will each be trained on the particular aspects of their role. Hāli‘imaile Community Garden has equipment and supplies needed for the work, though anything our volunteers can bring as well would also be welcome.

 

Learning Opportunities

Knowledge of Hāli‘imaile Community Garden and how the programs fit into the larger picture of food self-sufficiency. Knowledge of plant species and care Knowledge of organic gardening techniques and how to use gardening tools . Knowledge of community garden management.

 

Initial Minimum Commitment

Scheduling and length of service are fairly flexible; however, there is an expectation that volunteers fulfill an initial commitment of 50 service hours with no less than 3 hours per week (12 hours per month).  The garden operates year-round.

 

Scheduling Guidelines

Shifts are a minimum of 3 hours in length between the hours of 11 am and 6 pm year round.

Volunteer: Plowing & Planting Plots to Feed the Hungry in the Goodwill Garden

Hali’imaile Community Garden will be preparing a 3rd space for planting where we will grow eggplants for the Goodwill Garden. Project volunteers will work together to rake the existing wood chips to the side pathways, remove/save/relocate existing plants, add compost/calcium, till, and test/check the existing irrigation system. There will also be opportunities to plant the seeds in start trays and hand paint a sign to mark the plot as a Goodwill Garden plot. Hali’imaile Community Garden will be preparing a 3rd space for planting where we will grow eggplants for the Goodwill Garden. Project volunteers will work together to rake the existing wood chips to the side pathways, remove/save/relocate existing plants, add compost/calcium, till, and test/check the existing irrigation system. There will also be opportunities to plant the seeds in start trays and hand paint a sign to mark the plot as a Goodwill Garden plot.
