Many volunteers are noticing signs of memory loss and impaired cognitive abilities in their participants. We realize how intimidating this may be for a volunteer. Na Hoaloha (Lori Busta) has collaborated with Heather Greenwood-Junkermeier (UH Cooperative Extension) to deliver a comprehensive workshop about dementia to Na Hoaloha volunteers. Our goal is to empower our volunteers in order to deliver service with confidence to this ever-growing population. The workshop will focus on three specific topics:
- Causes of memory loss and dementia warning signs
- The importance of building relationships in dementia care
- Practical and effective communication tips for working with a person who is cognitively impaired and understanding behaviors as communication
