Description

Did you know that Keālia Pond National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) is a 704 acre refuge located on the island of Maui? The main Keālia Pond is 200 acres and it can swell up to 400 acres of wetland habitat depending on seasonal water levels. The wetland protects the beach and offshore coral reef system from the effects of erosion, sedimentation, and pollution associated with flood waters. It is also home to native wetland birds such as the ae'o and ʻalae keʻokeʻo. Wetlands are biologically productive habitats and are home to 1/3 of the threatened and endangered species in the U.S.

Join the staff of Keālia Pond NWR on Monday, Feb 2, from 9am-12pm to celebrate World Wetlands Day by helping to remove invasive weeds located near the Pond. Work will be in hot and exposed areas. Hand gloves will be provided. Bring a water bottle and wear closed toe shoes.
