Honoring Our Kupuna - The Heart of Hawaiian Values

In Hawaiʻi, the word kupuna holds deep cultural meaning. It refers not only to our elders, but also to the treasured knowledge, experience, and wisdom they carry. In traditional Hawaiian communities, kupuna are revered for their life lessons and their essential role in maintaining cultural continuity. Volunteering with our kupuna is more than service-it is an exchange of aloha, respect, and community strength that benefits everyone involved.

Across Maui, Molokaʻi, and Lānaʻi, many nonprofits welcome volunteers to spend time with elderly residents-providing companionship, assistance, and joy. These experiences can be life-changing-not only for the kupuna but for the volunteers themselves.

Psychological and Emotional Benefits for All

Volunteering with kupuna creates a ripple of emotional and psychological benefits:

  • For the elderly: Companionship reduces loneliness and depression, often helping prevent cognitive decline and improving physical health. A 2021 study in The Gerontologist found that social engagement significantly enhances quality of life in older adults.

  • For volunteers: Interacting with older adults boosts empathy, reduces stress, and increases life satisfaction. According to research from the Journal of Happiness Studies, people who volunteer regularly experience greater psychological well-being and even live longer.

  • For the community: These intergenerational bonds build empathy, preserve cultural heritage, and create resilient networks of care across Maui County.

Share the Spirit of Aloha-One Kupuna at a Time

When we serve our elders, we serve our entire community. Volunteering with kupuna allows us to preserve the deep-rooted values of aloha, mālama (care), and kuleana (responsibility). Whether it's reading a book, sharing a meal, or simply listening to a life story, your time can bring immeasurable joy and connection.
