Who We Are
Kaiāulu Initiatives is a Lāhaina-based nonprofit born from the aftermath of the August 8, 2023 wildfires, with a mission to heal our community through the restoration of ʻāina. We believe that caring for the land and caring for people are one and the same, and our work reflects that — from reforesting native watershed, to cultivating food security, to creating space for cultural education and community healing. Every volunteer day is an opportunity to show up for Lāhaina, connect with the land, and be part of something that is being built together, one workday at a time.
What We Do
Volunteer days at Kaiāulu are hands-on and grounded in the land. Depending on the season and where we are in our restoration work, volunteers can expect to be watering, weeding, planting native species, and removing plastic from existing plantations. The work takes place on our site above Lāhaina, where every task — however small it may seem — contributes directly to the recovery and regeneration of this place. Come ready to work, ready to connect, and ready to be part of something meaningful. We are a Lahaina grassroots nonprofit that is working on reforestation efforts in Lahaina in hopes to be a less fire prone place. We love to build pilina (bonds) with other community members, be a safe place for folks to come work ‘āina and decompress, and are open for folks who are interested in being apart of important and much needed change. Our mission is to rebuild Lahaina's landscape by creating a thriving watershed that supports and sustains both the environment and the community for generations to come.
